RISE at Great Falls Middle School
and Turners Falls High School

September 2007 to February 2009

Total Number of Volunteers: 58
Total Number of Volunteer Hours: 2,937
Total Fiscal Value of RISE Services: $59,840

Current RISE Programming:

Japanese Culture Club – A volunteer leads this after-school program for nine students from both the High School and Middle School.  Students learn basic language skills, watch Japanese films, and enjoy Japanese cuisine.

Study Hall – Two volunteers run an after-school study hall on Monday and Thursday afternoons.  It operates on a drop-in basis and is a place for kids to get help with homework in a relaxed environment.

Field Trip Chaperone – The RISE Resource Coordinator has served as a chaperone on two field trips, one for the Middle School and one for the High School.

Math Tutoring – There is a 9th grade student who was previously home schooled and has extremely low math skills.  RISE coordinated two volunteers to work one-on-one with this student every day of the week for the duration of the Fall semester.

Guest Performance – A locally managed pop-punk band called Undefyed has agreed to do a free show for both the Middle and High School.  The band was scheduled to perform in December, but due to the weather they were rescheduled for January.

Book Club – A volunteer and a High School student have partnered up to lead an after-school book club.

Gay Straight Alliance – Many students in the High School have asked RISE to help bring back a GSA in Turners.  The RISE Resource Coordinator has partnered with two youth workers from CommunityAction! Youth Programs to get this program off the ground.

Past RISE Projects: (Great Falls Middle School only)

Fitness and Fun – A local yoga instructor volunteered to lead this after-school club.  The 10 students that participated explored movements that built strength, flexibility and cooperation.

Community Service Learning – RISE partnered with the Opening Gaits Therapeutic Riding Center in Gill to offer an after-school community service learning opportunity for students.  The students went to Opening Gaits once a week to help take care of the horses and occasionally got to assist during riding sessions with other youth.

Intramural Sports – Many of the students asked for more opportunities to run around and be active.  As a response, RISE created an after-school intramural sports program.  Students were able to pick their favorite games to play under the supervision of an adult volunteer.

Directed Reading – A RISE volunteer partnered with a 7th grade English teacher to be an assistant during the Directed Reading period of the day.

Guest Performances – RISE coordinated a free performance by a local a cappella group, the Amherst Zumbyes.  The Zumbyes not only gave a great performance but also stayed to offer a singing workshop for chorus students.  Several students were so excited about the experience that they subsequently formed their own a cappella group at the school.

The Pioneer Valley Symphony Orchestra (PVSO) – In the midst of struggling arts and music programs and continued limited resources, the PVSO offered several free tickets to students to attend their concerts.  The RISE Resource Coordinator organized and transported students to and from the concerts, offering them an opportunity to be exposed to expert performers and beautiful music.

Social Norms Marketing/Anti-Bullying Initiative – RISE partnered with the Mediation Coordinator at the school and a volunteer from Community Coalition for Teens to facilitate Social Norms Marketing in the Middle School.  The partners trained a group of high school students who then went into the Middle School to survey students and process the data.

All Kinds of Art – A local retiree with a great interest in art volunteered to run this after school program.  She brought many of her own supplies and created projects based on the interests of the students involved.

Guest Reader – A leader amongst local youth-service providers volunteered to come in and read to a classroom of students as well as talk about her role in the community.

Field Trip Coordination – The RISE Resource Coordinator not only served as a chaperone but also coordinated a field trip to two local colleges in response to a request from the school to provide more college exposure to the Middle School students.

NESEA Educational Kit – The RISE Resource Coordinator identified a local non-profit, The Northeast Sustainable Energy Association, which had a small amount of funding to give to schools.  After receiving an application from RISE, NESEA awarded funds to purchase an environmental science education kit.  An 8th grade science teacher had been asking for such a kit and was thrilled when the RISE proposal was approved.

Youth Opportunities Fair – This event was an opportunity for youth-service providers to come into the school and promote their summer programs.  The goal was to make the students more aware of and excited about the many opportunities to engage in out-of-school time programming.  This fair also allowed the Middle School to open its doors to community partners and forge relationships with organizations and agencies that work to benefit the students.
